This guide will show you how to use a private key stored in a text document to ssh into a remote server using Putty. Thanks to reddit user 177854 for providing this write-up!
First you have to download PuTTy Key generator or puttygen. You can find it it here. After downloading PuTTY Key Generator open up Puttygen and you should see something like this.
From this page you can generate a public/private key pair or load an already existing one, which is what we need to do. Hit load and select the private key you have in text document (.txt) form. Be sure to select View all file types, Puttygen’s default is to look for private key files already.
Now you should see a message that tells you that you have successfully imported the private key.
Don’t forget to save it so it will be converted to the correct format.
Entering a passphrase is optional and not necessary for bandit, in the real world it is recommended.
Now we are ready to logon to our server! To tell Putty that we want to use our private key to log on to our server. We will find the place to upload the file under Connection -> SSL -> Auth.
Here we see the space to upload our private key. Now that we have it uploaded it’s time to connect to the server! Just type in the server name under session like any normal connection and you will be connected! No password needed!
